A few days ago, I had a chance to visit Frederic Leighton’s house in Holland Park. I didn’t know much about him, but he was part of a circle of painters who were also close friends during the Victorian Era.
Visiting his home, you really get a sense of what it was like to live in that era, if you were a successful painter who was making a lot of money. The house was built to his every specification.

That’s true! He was President of the Royal Academy for, I think, fifteen years. And he became wealthy, which was how he managed to build a house made to his every specification.
