King Maximilian inherits the throne after his father, Ludwig, relinquishes it in order to live the rest of his life with his courtesan/lover, Lola Montez.

King Maximilian’s wife, Queen Marie Frederike, births two sons: Ludwig II, and Otto.

Queen Marie Frederike walks the children through the mural-coated hallways out to the garden. She allows Ludwig to wander the hedges while she gazes at the infant Otto and feels . . . profound boredom.
