Self’s garden is very much “in process.”
It used to frustrate her: Nothing seemed to grow right.
She left for three years, and this is what it looks like now:
A wee little rose in a wooden planter box, that looked dead, dead, dead — in a few months of regular watering, is covered with beautiful magenta blooms.
She forgot how many irises she planted. The ones in the side yard were deep blue. The ones next to the lime tree were white. And these, against a side fence, are lavender and yellow.
She hung up this wooden angel 20 years ago. At the time she hung it, nothing grew around it. Now, it’s almost completely obscured by a huge bush of yellow beach daisies.

Today, instead of looking through her archives, self decided to take some pictures of her garden.
She’s just back to her house in Redwood City after almost three years. The garden is not the same: it’s a little wilder. But she likes it.

Books come in and out of self’s life all the time. Sometimes, if she’s lucky, they come when she’s most ready.
She’s currently reading The Amber Spyglass, Book III of His Dark Materials. Why has she waited this long to enter this world? She began with the most recent Philip Pullman novel, La Belle Sauvage, which she finished reading a little over two weeks ago. Then she moved on to The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife.
So far, self’s favorite passage in The Amber Spyglass is the one about choice:
Self visited the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (North Highway One, Fort Bragg) about a week ago.
She followed the sign marked “Ocean.”

Self dropped by the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and was reminded of the healing properties of the color green. She was there mere minutes after it opened. No one was around except for a man carrying a wooden easel. Later, she passed him on the path. He was just setting up.
By the way, the camera she uses is a Nikon Coolpix, about four years old. Got it at Costco. Good price.

It was another beautiful day in Mendocino. One thing about being here, there is always something self can take a picture of.
Right now, it is spring. So there’s an unbelievable amount of action going on, even in the vacant lots, and even if it’s just grass.
And there are many, many spring concerts abounding, such as this one advertised on a poster tacked up to a fence on Ukiah Street:
Spring is a great time to be outdoors and just soaking up the sights in Mendocino.
Her friends are telling her to come back for the Mendocino Music Festival (July) but all accommodations are booked solid.
Never mind. She’s just happy to be here in April.

It is spring. Self had a sudden hankering for shiitake mushrooms. So she walked to Corners of the Mouth Market on Ukiah. The vacant lots she passed were dotted with little white and yellow flowers, a whole profusion of them. She wouldn’t have stopped to take pictures if she hadn’t been thinking of this week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge: PROLIFIC.
