Final SquareOdds! All Manner of Trees

February has gone by so fast. How many of us had “Russia invades Ukraine” on their 2022 bingo cards? Or ZELENSKY?

Thanks so much, Becky, for hosting another fun Squares Challenge.

Here is self’s last collection of Odds. She chose to focus on trees.

  • trees next to Annaghmakerrig Lake in Ireland. She took this picture at dawn, her last morning in Annaghmakerrig.
  • the great Camperdown Elm in the Filoli Gardens in Woodside, California.
  • a “bearded” tree in Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park.

SquareOdds #21: Cheeky Brits

Tomorrow is the last day of the SquareOdds Challenge. It has been so much fun. Thank you, Becky for dreaming up The Squares Challenge!

Here are some cheeky pictures from London:

SquareOdds #20: “Our Whole, Unruly Selves”

Still playing catch-up with the SquareOdds Challenge!

What a month February has been. Thank you to Becky at Life of B for making it special.

Current exhibit, San Jose Museum of Art:

SquareOdds #19: Oh Garden Wild

“Wild” was the word one of self’s neighbors used to describe her garden. Yes, yes it is. She took these pictures last spring.

Posting this for Becky’s SquareOdds Challenge. It’s been a fun month.

SquareOdds # 18: What Is Going On?

February has zoomed by! Thank you to Becky of Life of B for hosting another scintillating Squares Challenge.

SquareOdds #17: Spitalfields, London

Can’t believe there are only a few days left of SquareOdds! It’s been an intense month. Especially in light of recent current events.

More from the Archives: East London, one of the most vibrant sections of this large and amazing city.

An Ottolenghi in Spitalfields! An abandoned Rolls Royce! Decrepit buildings!

SquareOdds #16: California Academy of Sciences

Self has fallen behind the SquareOdds Challenge! She will do her best to catch up.

Today, she’s sharing her photos from a visit last April to the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. The Academy and other museums were just beginning to open to the public again. Self rushed over as soon as she could.

The building is fabulous. Designed by Renzo Piano, it is powered entirely by solar energy. It has a living roof — six inches of soil were carted in, and then the designers decided to see what would grow. Now, years later, a meadow has sprung up. It is lovely.

Here are two views of the living roof, from above and below:

SquareOdds #15: Pictures from an Exhibition

Becky, host of the Squares Challenge, has a fantastic photo of a fig tree seemingly bursting out of a window!

Self’s SquareOdds today are museum objects.

Can anyone guess what these are?

The first is a bronze from the Crocker Museum in Sacramento.

The second is a relic from Pompeii, seen at the Last Supper in Pompeii exhibit at the Legion of Honor.

Points to anyone who guesses correctly!

SquareOdds #10: Prague Castle

Self has been on three trips with her niece, Irene, each one organized by her niece. Self is so grateful. She’s not the best at organizing. With Irene, self has visited Florence, Paris, and Prague.

Prague was our last trip together, in May 2019. Irene found a guide to take us around Prague Castle. As usual, self was drawn to details such as these small carvings on the gates guarding the entrance to a cathedral: from the super-realistic to the mythic, all on the same gate!

Thank you to Becky at Life of B for hosting SquareOdds! The Squares Challenge is always a lot of fun.

SquareOdds # 9: Shoreditch, East London

Self loves The Squares Challenge hosted by Becky at Life of B.

It is so much fun looking at the galleries of odd things.

Here are pictures from a walk around East London she did with Old Map Man, who used to lead tours. She loves that part of London because of its ersatz grit and cheekiness. The walls are a collage of old flyers.
