Past Squares 23: Liverpool, November 2019

The Past Squares Challenge ends tomorrow. Becky, who hosts the challenge from Life of B, announced that the next Challenge will be in February.

The very best Chinese food in Liverpool is directly across from the Liverpool Cathedral. Self has a friend who moved to Manchester, and this friend knows all the BEST Chinese restaurants in Manchester and Liverpool.

The Museum of Liverpool, on Albert Dock, is one of those must-sees. And here is self! Who rarely appears in pictures! She’s wearing a hat given to her by a friend in Philadelphia, who told her this would be the only way to survive an English winter! Thanks much, Anne-Adele!

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Past Squares 22: London, December 2018

Self forgets. Memory is fallible. But photographs never lie.

She used to spend a lot of time in England and Ireland.

For Past Squares, her second post of the day: London, early December 2018.

Past Squares 19: Souvenirs

Can you believe it’s THE LAST WEEK of Past Squares? WAH! It’s been such a fun challenge. Much gratitude to Life of B for hosting so many wonderful Squares Challenges.

Self’s roof sprang a leak during the last storm. Everything inside the closet was soaked, so she had to haul everything out and decide what was worth saving.

There’s a map of the New York subway system (!) and a poster that was probably something son made when he was an RA for Muir Hall, Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo.

Memories!

Past Squares 17: Road Trip, San Luis Obispo, June 2021

The minute California started coming out of lockdown, self threw a few clothes into her car and drove south, listening to The Bangles and Wilson Phillips on her car radio. (“Someday somebody’s going to make you want to turn around and say goodbyeeeee!”). She passed all the old, familiar sights: Paso Robles, Atascadero, San Miguel, San Luis Obispo!

Posting this for the Past Squares challenge, hosted by Becky at Life of B.

Past Squares 16: Looking Back to January 2021

Where did the year go?

Self distinctly remembers it being January.

But what happened? How did February, March, April, May, June, July, August and September slip by so fast?

Inspired by Becky’s posting of a clock tower, self went to her 2021 calendar (featuring 12 of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s most iconic work), and decided to share the image for January.

Past Squares 14: CLOSED FOR GOOD

Self has visited Paris three times. The second and third times, she stayed in the seventeenth arrondissement, close to the Arc de Triomphe. Around the corner from her, on the Avenue Mac Mahon, was a fabulous movie theatre, which was perfect because self is a movie aficionado and she ended up watching movie after movie there (French, with English subtitles) Much to her dismay/grief, she discovered recently that it had closed.

Today, for Past Squares, she wants to commemorate this fabulous place, Cinema Mac Mahon. Here’s a link to the theatre’s backstory. It “opened its doors in 1938”! She took these pictures in May 2017:

Past Squares 10: Things Lost, Never Found

Today’s post for Past Squares (Thank you once again, Becky at Life of B, for hosting the Squares Challenge) is:

THINGS SELF LOST:

Shades; Red Hat

She bought both in Paris. They had great sentimental value. WAAAAH!

Past Squares 9: CROWDS

In the first months of the pandemic, self looked through her archives, a lot. What she found most striking were her photos of CROWDS. Looking at these pictures from a post-pandemic mindset, it’s hard to imagine being comfortable in crowds this big, ever again.

(Loving the theme of Past Squares. Thank you, Becky at Life of B, for this fascinating challenge!)

The interior shot was taken at the Louvre. Look at that crowd of people trying to get in front of the Mona Lisa! Self didn’t think she’d ever make it, but a Spanish tourist grabbed self’s hand. It is much easier to push when there are two of you. Somehow, we managed to get close enough for each of us to take a picture.

The second picture was taken on the steps of Sacre Couer. Again, what a crowd. Wonder what it’s like in front of Sacre Couer today.

Past Squares 8: HATS

How much fun is it to join the Squares Challenge? Super super fun!

This month, the theme is the PAST (or Past Squares, your choice!)

Self has been looking back at the memorable exhibits she’s seen over the years.

In 2017, the Legion of Honor had an exhibit on Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade. Self had a blast! Here are a few pictures from the exhibit:

Past Squares 6: St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin

Self misses travel soooo much.

Grateful to Becky at Life of B for coming up with the theme of Past Squares. Self is really having fun going through pictures of her past trips.

These are from May 2017.

Self loves parks, all parks. She loves green, and she loves people-watching.
