Flower of the Day (FOTD): Acanthus

It’s been a week — no, more — since self has posted a flower picture for Cee Neuner’s Flower of the Day (FOTD) Challenge. Her flower today is Acanthus.

Self posted a picture of it on Facebook and asked if anyone knew the name for this flower, which grows along one side of her yard. A friend from Malta was the first to answer: “It’s called Acanthus, and it grows all over the Mediterranean. Its image is often carved into tombs.”

The man who built this house (in 1939) was from Italy. He planted a magnificent walnut, and all kinds of fruit trees (which have died one by one, over the 30 years she’s been in this house). Perhaps the fruit trees and the acanthus reminded him of his native country. Perhaps he was homesick.

She saw massive specimens in Filoli, the last time she visited, maybe a year ago (They were allowing a small number of visitors, everyone had to be masked)

Funny, another friend, who has a large, beautiful garden, told her it was “a weed” and grew wild. It’s definitely not a weed. She remembers, the first ten years in this house, the spikes were profuse, and very tall. But climate change is a thing: every summer in the last 10 years, that patch of side yard has been exposed to the most punishing sun. The leaves turned brown, and no flowers appeared. Until this year.

Stay cool, dear blog readers. Stay cool.

July #TreeSquare Challenge #3: Still the Backyard

Self urges everyone to look at the gallery of trees on The Life of B, host of the #TreeSquare challenge. There are many beautiful trees there!

Here are two more from self’s backyard: an olive and a plum tree.

July #TreeSquare Challenge #2: The Backyard

The Square Challenge is a lot of fun, so happy whenever she can post for it. The theme for July is TREES.

More about the challenge over at The Life of B.

This is self’s backyard, which is ringed by trees:

Flower of the Day: Echinacea

Thanks to Cee Neuner for hosting the Flower of the Day (FOTD) Photo Challenge.

Self thinks echinacea are some of the most beautiful flowers she’s ever seen. And there were masses of them around the Paso Robles Inn, where she spent the night. The Inn has such a gorgeous garden!

They also have a koi pond, with the fattest koi self has ever seen (and she’s seen a lot of koi)

Stay cool, dear blog readers. Stay cool. She is glad she decided to take a little time off and head down the central coast. Her house was baking.

Flower of the Day (FOTD) Challenge: Hydrangeas

Summer means hydrangeas. Self has some large ones on her porch.

Thank you to Cee Neuner for hosting this fun challenge.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge # 151: From Large to Small

from the host of this challenge, P. A. Moed:

  • This week, we’re thinking about size–from large to small. For this challenge, pick a color and select several photos that feature that color.  Start with a photo of a big subject in that color (for example, a wall) and move all the way down to a small subject in that same color (for example, an earring).

Self’s color is Sky Blue. She took the sky picture this morning, and the others a few days ago, from her porch.

Flower of the Day (FOTD), 4 June 2021: Geraniums

Thanks to Cee Neuner for this wonderful Photo Challenge.

Her geraniums are spilling over their containers, including a huge Chinese pot. Self thinks they look better from afar.

Last on the Card Challenge: May 2021

This challenge is hosted by bushboy’s world.

The last on the card was this picture of a columbine, which self already posted for Flower of the Day.

She’ll post it side by side with the next-to-the-last shot. Which was of the same columbine, though self doesn’t like it as much as the one she posted earlier.

Stay safe, dear blog readers. Stay safe.

Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge (CMMC), 2 June: Macro or Close-Up

Love Cee Neuner’s Photo Challenges.

Here’s another: Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge

  • just get as close to the subject as your camera lens allows.

My close-up of the day: my hydrangea ‘Nikko blue,’ just starting to bloom.

When my hydrangeas start blooming, I know summer is officially here.

Stay safe, dear blog readers. Stay safe.

Flower of the Day (FOTD), 30 May: Columbine

The columbine on self’s front porch are blooming again. She went out to take a few pictures for the May Colors and Letters Challenge (today’s color is Orange Red), but ended up taking pictures of her other flowers as well.

Thanks to Cee Neuner for hosting the Flower of the Day Challenge!
