All week, those perky Weather Report people have been saying, “It’s going to be good this week — a warming trend!” She wishes they would just stop. It builds up self’s expectations. Monday was cold, and today was just as.
Towards 5 p.m., though, sun came out. Not for long, but it was enough for self to grab her camera and see what her roses looked like in sun.

Sun finally came out, mid-afternoon.
Self’s roses are just loving the weather, they’ve never looked so good. The Icebergs are the white roses (on top). The Barbra Streisand roses are purple. Just behind both is a Japanese maple (Self’s flower beds are layered, more by accident than by design)

As those of you who live in northern California know, we’ve gotten more than our fair share of rain, the past week.
The good news is: profuse rain means profuse flowers!
The bad news is: the flower stems get wobbly and the flowers tend to flop over.
I grow scabiosa on my porch. And poor things are on the ground. But they are still pretty.

It stopped raining for a wee bit, so I grabbed my camera and headed to the backyard.
My Fourth of July rose is just starting to bloom.

Her Betty Boop rose, which has survived over a decade of neglect, is about to bloom. It’s in the backyard, trapped behind some overgrown holly trees. Self went tramping around back there this afternoon, trying to assess damage.

Self is back from the Philippines. So now she can start posting pictures of her garden again.
First up, her roses. They are spectacular (the ones in the front yard). The roses in the backyard, the ones in pots right in front of the French doors, look horrible: over-run with rust, and leaves scorched. Self will have to do major reconstruction: the Moonlight Romantica would have been covered in blooms, but the rust and the leaf scorch have really done a number on it. She’d say about 1/3 of the plant has healthy leaves, the rest will need to be chopped off.
There IS one backyard rose that seems to be thriving, and it’s one that she’s moved here and there in the garden, and neglected. It is usually covered in rust. This year — barely any rust. And it is blooming.

Found a beautiful flower growing right outside the Liliw Cathedral.
