Cato in THE DECLINE AND FALL

Aside from her Real Life, self writes a lot of fan fiction, all in The Hunger Games universe. In her AU, she has come to use the following characters over and over:

  • Seneca
  • Plutarch
  • Cato

Hunger Games Plutarch is manipulative, a consummate politician. Hunger Games Seneca is a tool, pure and simple. Hunger Games Cato is a blonde, physically powerful type who ends up in a battle to the death with Katniss and Peeta. Guess who wins?

Now that she is reading The Decline and Fall, she is reminded that the above names actually belonged to real people.

In The Hunger Games, Cato is very much a bully.

In The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Gibbon on p. 348 writes “we may learn from the example of Cato that a character of pure and inflexible virtue . . . ” In other words, RL Cato is a good guy.

#what

Self will stop here, as she’s having conniptions over some #APBreaking news about Paul Manafort and it is putting her in a very sullen state of mind.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Fan Fiction Writer Appreciation Day

Today is Fan Fiction Writer Appreciation Day on tumblr.

YAY!

To show her appreciation, self is quoting from the most recent chapter of a fan fic she’s been following since the start of the year.

“Double turns, Katniss, this isn’t a district company!” Plutarch shouts at her as she drops out of her first turn. Katniss hadn’t even realized she’d singled the piqué and she nods as she goes into her second turn, a double this time.

“They should also be clean, Katniss!” Plutarch sounds exasperated with her. Katniss breathes out, and does the last four piqués into a soutenu, finishing with a pas de chat. She holds herself there, waiting for Plutarch’s nod of approval, then drops her arms when nothing comes.

Oh, down the rabbit hole self goes.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Fan Fiction Again

Comment from a reader on an author’s announcement that she is in medical school:

  • I would prefer you to be my doctor any day over some doctor who doesn’t know the difference between the Capitol and the Capital.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Everlark Thursday

Twenty years after the demise of President Snow, Peeta starts having nightmares about the Games again. He’s re-called to the Capitol so Dr. Aurelius can help him figure out why. Turns out there is a mysterious Katniss look-alike named Melania who haunts his dreams . . . and who also happens to be on-staff in the hospital where Peeta is currently being treated.

Coincidence? Or evidence of a nefarious conspiracy? Self’s feeling is —

No! Peeta! Stop! Eeeeeeeeek! Go back to 12, pronto!

(To be continued)

Word of the Day: Compostion

Self has no idea whether “compostion” is a real word, and she’s in too much of a hurry today to look it up. She only gave herself 10 minutes to peruse a new Everlark fan fic, and here’s a cheeky passage (It’s about a future world where women rule over men, and men are kept chained in the basement for the sole purpose of reproduction. Like that? Thought you might, lol! In this story, Peeta is Katniss’s slave and Finnick is Annie’s)

News Flash! (You’re supposed to procreate, not fall in love, dammit!)

  • Annie Cresta of 12 was reported for emotional compostion with her former slave, Finnick Odair. We realize you’ve all been patiently waiting for an update on this atrocity and we’re finally able to give you the news. Such a disgraceful act cannot continue unpunished. Therefore, at the end of the week, the slave Odair will be publicly executed for the crime of leading one of our own astray. Come along and witness the event, cheering!

Anyhoo, Katniss’s Aunt Effie gifts Peeta to her as a sixteenth birthday present:

“Katniss, this is your slave. Responds to the name of Peeta and will do whatever you wish. Whatever you wish.”

Wait, Katniss thinks. Did my Aunt Effie just wink at me?

Katniss’s mouth “falls open” at this exchange, and Effie says:

“So pure! It’s so sweet.” Effie taps Katniss’s jaw closed. “You’ll catch flies, honey.”

LOL!

And why does Finnick always have to end up dead? Self’s just saying. He’s the Leonardo di Caprio of fan fiction.

Stay tuned.

2nd Fan Fiction Quote of the Day

The show at the British Museum is timed entry. She bought her ticket on-line, ages ago, and her entry time isn’t until 10:30 a.m., so she decides to wait up in her room.

Which is really just an excuse to continue reading a story she found early this morning. This one’s so good, self is temporarily ditching Watch Me in favor of. Even though, after googling a bit, self realizes this particular fan fic author has been off the grid for two years and isn’t likely coming back, which means the work is incomplete and likely will remain so.

  • I really did try to give the class a chance because I really do enjoy lit and poetry, but after listening to a group of self-proclaimed “intellects” wax on poetically about the beauty of Sylvia Plath’s multiple suicide attempts, I only go to class now to turn in assignments and take tests. I hate when people talk about the beauty in suicide or death, because if either is something you’ve experienced you know there isn’t any beauty. Death is dreadful.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Sentence of the Day: Fan Fiction

You can smell the desperation in the air — and it smells like home baked goods and hair products, and it wears Lilly and pearls.

—  Katniss Everdeen

How about another?

Adderall burns when you snort it, and it tastes awful, but I can’t ignore my pre-library tradition.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Viking Everlark?

I went with bloody sword
Wound grouse-raven following me
And a resounding spear
To a hard Viking attack.

* * * *

That’s all self’s got. For now.

The Reading Addict

Honestly, yesterday was a killer.

Moving from Annaghmakerrig to Cork, with bags of books dangling from each arm. What was she thinking?

By the time she got to Café Paradiso, she was like, dead. D-E-A-D.

Anyhoo, it’s been a very blissful day, spent doing absolutely nothing. Holed up in The Red Room, reading. Listened to a classical music station. Wrote a further chapter of her Everlark WIP, which she warned her readers (five chapters ago) would take as much as a year between updates, because for some reason she feels she must be in Ireland to continue, and she won’t be back in Ireland until next year.

But she keeps saying that in the notes to each and every chapter, and right after she writes that, she ends up writing another chapter.

Her last chapter ends with this image of Katniss:

  • She hears a sound and whirls, snatching her bow and nocking an arrow in one swift movement.

Reading in Cork

What a tease she is.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Fan Fiction of the Day

The set-up: Katniss is returning to her car after a night class at her community college. And she gets held up by, of all people, PEETA! PEETA! PEETA! Who is a criminal trying to feed a drug habit! Oh my Lord! What? What? What?

. . .  the air smells sweet and fresh, like growth. The street lamps that line my path from the library to my car are dim at best, and there’s no moonlight because there’s a storm on its way. I don’t even have a shadow; I’m followed instead by the restless wind that stirs in the freshly-leafed trees.

Self loves the descriptions!

It really is spring in this part of the world.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.
