Earth 4: Elk, California

Self-explanatory, really.

Elk is about 17 miles south of Mendocino, CA, along twist-y Highway 1.

Advice to neophytes on 1: Prepare to pull over at every turn-out. The locals speed, and you’ll be so nervous you won’t be able to take in the view.

Stay tuned.

Boundaries 5: Mendocino and Elk

Self has always been fascinated by windows. She thinks it is because windows impose a kind of order on a landscape, reducing it to manageable chunks (what is viewed within the window frame).

Early this year, self was in Mendocino. She was teaching a travel writing workshop for the Mendocino Art Center. Self took this shot from the window of the laundry room at the Center:

Here’s another example of BOUNDARY, the railing around the deck of a B & B in Elk, CA (about 17 miles down the coast from Mendocino):

Thanks to Joel Tan, who told self about the spectacular views from the back of the cottages in -- blanking on the name of the inn but she thinks it might be the Greenwood Inn.

The cottage is very WEE. Therefore, when you step through the cottage door, it feels like you're being pitched straight into the ocean (with only a bed in between).

Blur 5: Mendocino Again

Spent most of the first three months of this year in Mendocino. Little wonder she has tons of pictures from that time.

The first picture — she’s always wanted to post it, but not until this week’s Photo Challenge — BLUR — did she get the opportunity. One night, the actors were rehearsing, and since self’s apartment was right above, she heard the raised voices. She thought someone was actually being assaulted and went running outside to call someone. The first people she saw were in the Ceramic Arts Studio, and they were like, Oh, that? They’re probably just rehearsing the play. Lol.

Blur: WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge

This week’s WordPress Photo Challenge theme is BLUR.

  • Share a photo that’s a blur.

Self has LOTS of those kinds of pictures!

For some reason, her blurred pictures are some of her most emotional. She thinks it’s because they project a sense of evanescence.

Fresh: WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge

It has been snowing all day in New York City.

Nevertheless, self finds that she is still more than up to the challenge of posting about this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge:

FRESH

Share with us a photo that expresses something fresh.

More Rewards in Mendocino

The WordPress Photo Challenge this week is REWARD.

The prompt, in its entirety, reads:

Reward is filthy with possibility: it could be your third grader’s beaming smile after reading her first chapter book, a steaming mug of chicken soup after a long run in the cold, a photo of your brand-new baby — your reward for patience during nine months of construction, or your extended family gathered the dinner table.

Food is its own reward. Right? Right?

First, Queenie’s Road House in Elk. Worth driving 20 miles from Mendocino for.

Surrounding Oneself with Positive Images Is Very Rewarding

This week’s WordPress Photo Challenge is: REWARD.

Here’s a reward: being able to smell the flowers!

Self was able to cross off one of the items on her list of things to do before she leaves Mendocino: She finally experienced the excellence of breakfast at Queenie’s Road House in Elk (It closes every winter but re-opened a few weeks ago). She had strawberry waffles.

Queenie’s is definitely where the locals hang out: it was crowded. Thankfully, there was room for a solitary diner.
