Work-in-Progress: The Rorqual

(Self hopes this story, which she started writing last year at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, can go into her newest collection)

This has always been, from the very first draft, the opening paragraph:

Sunrise, Albion, California: January 2017

The report came from somewhere on the Bering Sea. The pair had left Yellowknife the previous morning. The woman, it appeared, was headed for Baranof, the man for Kuiu. Both were on foot.

The story was born New Year’s Day 2017, in Albion, California.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Oh, the Places Self Will Go

This week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge is

WANDERLUST

  • Have you traveled anywhere exciting lately? This week, let’s see where you’ve been. — David W., The Daily Post

Self is still in Ireland! Which is a long way from her home in northern California. Here’s a wee artwork that artist Bernadette Burns (who lives on Sherkin Island, West Cork — self met her at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre) left behind in her studio. Self taped to it to her MacBook Air as an emblem of what she is: a wanderer.

Here’s a shot of Annaghmakerrig Lake in early March. The wind was blowing hard that day. Self was fascinated by the ripples on the lake’s surface and by the outline of trees on the far shore. She would never have known this lake if she weren’t seized by such wanderlust:

And here’s a picture of the view from Albion River Inn, California, where she spent New Year’s. And began writing a new story, called The Rorqual, which is about a sea invasion of Earth (by creatures called Longnecks). It was the first New Year’s she spent completely by herself, and she made the most of it.

#amwriting: More of “Invasion, Seamount, Antarctica”

  • A large shelf of ice had dislodged — calved — in Hobart Bay. The immensity of the sound — a low thunder that cascaded off the sides of the snow-capped mountains — was deeply unsettling. Just days earlier, the woman, Tamara, had bid farewell to her daughter at Baranof. (from Invasion, Seamount, Antarctica, a story-in-progress)

Watching the ocean in Albion, self was fascinated by a speck far off that seemed to appear and disappear. Honestly, it could have been one of the longnecks she’s describing in her story, the ones that appear in the Bering Sea and begin the invasion. Which then results in the Navy calling up a class of mutants called the pagophilics.

It was probably just a rock. But it was the appearing and disappearing that made self think of sea monsters.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.
