Private Percy Claire lost his face at Cambrai. At this point, self has been looking up the pictures of the maimed men (so she will have no illusions). Imagine her surprise when she came upon this picture of Percy Claire! Who was the surgeon? Private Claire’s face was maimed so badly that a medic who ran up to try and treat him did not know where his mouth was. But from this picture, you could never tell that, once upon a time, Percy Claire had NO face.
