Say What, Now?

In 2000, researchers at Dartmouth and Harvard University catalogued US Bureau of Justice Statistics data on sentence length for vehicular homicide — largely drunk driving accidents — based on the victims’ characteristics. They looked at reams of sentencing data from courtrooms across America and found that when prosecutors charged a person with vehicular homicide, the prison sentence was 53 percent shorter if the victim was Black.
