Quote of the Day: England’s Magnificent Gardens

In 1934, the BBC launched In Your Garden, a talk show hosted by Cecil Middleton. Though it had been broadcasting gardening talk shows “from soon after its inception in 1922,” it was Cecil Middleton’s show that “made the real breakthrough.” At its peak, “it had 3.5 million listeners.”

His appeal was summed up this way by a friendly critic:

“Mr. Middleton will assume that your soil is poor and your pocket poor. All he asks is that your hopes are high and your Saturday afternoons at his service.”
