More on Virus: CHILDREN OF TIME, p. 67

Chapter 2.4 is a spider chapter (The spider chapters alternate with the human chapters; really enjoying this clever book!)

The virus was intended for a primate host, however, and so the end state that it has been programmed to seek is something that Portia labiata can never become. Instead the nanovirus has mutated and mutated in its inbuilt quest to reach an impossible goal, the end that justifies all conceivable means.

More successful variants lead to more successful hosts, who in turn pass on the superior mutated infection. From the microscopic point of view of the nanovirus, Portia and every other affected species on the planet are merely vectors for the onward transmission of the virus’s own evolving genes.

Virus mutates, always, in its search for the perfect host.

Stay tuned.

Two-Thousand Light Years in Cryogeny: Children of Time, p. 39

The entire crew of the ship Gilgamesh is in cryogeny, programmed to wake up after 2,000 light years. Before that time, a signal registers and the parameters require that the Commander be informed. The first person the Commander takes out of sleep is Holsten, a linguist.

Holsten listens to the garbled signal and then declares, “Imperial C.”

“There was a message there, finally opening like a flower to him, spilling out its brief, succinct contents in a language that had died before the ice came.”

Gosh, this is good.

Stay tuned.
