3 CALIFORNIA CITIES (Tuesday Photo Challenge)

Self loves whenever viveka of my guilty pleasures posts for a new photo challenge.

Yesterday she posted on Tuesday Photo Challenge’s prompt: CITY. She has pictures of Chicago, Seattle, Hong Kong, Stockholm, and several others.

Self took the picture below last Saturday, during the Palo Alto Art & Wine Festival.

Here’s a picture of Courthouse Square in self’s very own Redwood City:

Friday, Just before an evening concert, July 2019

Self gave a reading at Philippine Expressions in Long Beach in March 2018. The naval yards are huge. This is the marina at sunset. I have never seen so many boats gathered in one place, virtually stretching to the horizon. My feeling was awe:

Poetry Tuesday: C. L. Odell

Self loves C. L. Odell’s poem in the 24 June 2019 New Yorker.

PEONY

An excerpt

So let me have this now
before the blossoms
take my absence
from the yard

and I am again only one-sided,
a living thing responsible
to live, finding myself in tall grass,
whispering back.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.

Lens Artists Photo Challenge: Framing the Shot

The prompt — Framing the Shot — is Lens-Artists Photo Challenge # 60: “Explore different ways of framing images.”

Viveka has some great framing shots on her blog, my guilty pleasures.

Self’s home in Redwood City was built in 1939. It’s a very wee house, only 1250 square feet, but she loves the arched spaces (between the living and dining room). Arches are a kind of frame, aren’t they? But here the frame is off-center.

The painting above the bookshelf is one she brought from the Philippines: a collage by the late, great Filipino artist Santi Bose. It’s called The White Room. There’s a kind of “frame within the frame” thing going on.

The next two pictures are recent finds from son’s closet. The building blocks date from when he was a toddler. The pieces were all neatly arranged in the original wooden box:

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge # 59: ANGLES

Cleaning the closet in son’s room, came upon these Beatrix Potter pop-up books.

Then, reading viveka’s my guilty pleasures blog, found the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge this week is ANGLES.

Is that synchronicity? Or what?

Work-in-Progress: Camarote de Marinero (Part of Linked Collection)

“Father, here you go. You have your own room.”

There was a narrow platform which he presumed was his bed. Beneath the platform was a small cabinet.

“Your things here,” the boy said.

Later, he overheard the men talking about him: they called him cochino. Even though Matias was not fat, not even close to, he knew the most well-fed men in the villages were usually the friars. It was new to him, the contempt, the disrespect, because usually men of the cloth were treated with deference.

Another time, he heard the captain say, “sin experiencia del mundo” and assumed he was the one being referred to.

A PHOTO A WEEK CHALLENGE: YELLOW

The theme for the week is YELLOW.

DSCN0339

Self was cleaning out son’s room when she came upon a box of legos. Was fascinated by the little people and their yellow heads.

The box contains all of son’s Matchbox car collection. There’s a yellow car at the very top.

Word of the Day, 3rd Sunday of August 2019

DSCN0331

KINAADMAN is a Visayan word signifying both knowledge and wisdom. The sailboat (vinta, a familiar sight in southern Philippines seas) carries on its sail the letter K in the old native syllabary.

DSCN0330

In the olden days, Filipinos were sailors. Using only the stars for guidance, our fast-moving sailboats ranged far across the Pacific — to Guam, the Micronesian Islands, even  Hawai’i.

Photo A Week Challenge: STILL LIFE

Self LOVES still life. Taking pictures of things are a lot of fun.

So happy to join the Photo A Week Challenge this week.
