Viking Everlark?

I went with bloody sword
Wound grouse-raven following me
And a resounding spear
To a hard Viking attack.

That’s all self’s got. For now.

While Self Was at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre

She worked on a number of things. One was a collection of her dystopian science fiction. She placed one of those stories while she was still in Annaghmakerrig (luck of the Irish!)

She also worked on “First Causes,” her sequel to “First Life,” and got a very quick response. Though the magazine did not take her story, saying it was a little too “out there” for their magazine, the editors “nevertheless” wanted me to know: “This is indeed a very good story and we have no doubt it will be picked up by some other magazine.”

Ridiculous to get so excited over a rejection letter. But —

Self had worked particularly hard on the ending, and on the dialogue between the main character, Dragon, and his nemesis, Big:

There’s a bluish-greenish shadow on Big’s back, right between his shoulder blades. I see it when he disrobes for inspection.

What is the cause? Is it Tumor? Is it Plague? Is it Virus?

UNESCO City of Film and the Galway Film Fleadh

Here are the past city/designates:

  • 2009: Bradford, England
  • 2010: Sydney, Australia
  • 2014: Galway, Ireland

The only one self has been to is Galway.

At Tyrone Guthrie Centre this year, self met an artist named Ruth who was preparing her short film for showing at the Galway Film Fleadh, part of the Galway International Arts Festival in July. The documentary was filmed around a housing project, a wasteland of abandoned buildings and detritus. It was fascinating (not to mention, the filmmaker herself, Ruth, has so many stories to tell about the process of filming)

Best of luck, Ruth. Hope your film wins something.

Must make plans to visit the Galway International Arts Festival sometime!

Stay tuned.

Earth 4: Elk, California

Self-explanatory, really.

Elk is about 17 miles south of Mendocino, CA, along twist-y Highway 1.

Advice to neophytes on 1: Prepare to pull over at every turn-out. The locals speed, and you’ll be so nervous you won’t be able to take in the view.

Stay tuned.

The blogging challenge keep you motivated and start the new year on the "write" track!
