Still Reading Carrie Ryan’s “After the Cure”

It was a beautiful day in Mendocino. The sun was shining. It was warm.

Self had lunch out, at a small deli just a block away.

She was reading about

zombies. Specifically, about rehabilitated zombies. In Carrie Ryan’s story, “After the Cure,” which is the second story in After: Nineteen Stories of Apocalypse and Dystopia, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Wandling.

The story gave her chills.

It reminded her of Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies, which was made into a movie of the same name (an excellent adaptation starring Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence’s ex) Anyhoo, self picked up After at Gallery Bookshop on Main Street a few days ago. She’s been wanting to read it ever since Ellen Datlow picked her story “The Departure” (in Philippine Genre Stories) for an Honorable Mention (the list of Honorable Mentions was a long one — har har har) for Best Horror of 2011.

“After the Cure” is narrated by one of the Rehabilitated ex-zombies. The fact that she was an ex-zombie means she is shunned by a majority of the population.

There is a woman’s body floating in the pool outside the apartment complex where this Rehabilitated ex-zombie has taken refuge (far outside the city, because no one wants to have anything to do with a Rehabilitated). The Rehabilitated looks diffidently at this body in the pool and thinks:

I am so lonely that I consider attempting school in the morning.

Wow. That’s just. Wow. Self can’t even.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.
