Hunger Games Historical Fan Fiction: Katniss as a Passenger on the Titanic

At first, this idea didn’t quite grab her (even though she saw the movie, Titanic, with son and niece and nephews, at least twice) but hey, it isn’t that long (only five chapters), and every night before she goes to sleep she has to read a little fan fiction (Her only other reading is a mystery by Swedish writer Hakan Nesser, Woman With Birthmark. And damn if his book doesn’t turn out to be about a serial killer. A female serial killer. Who shoots all her male victims in the nuts. Self is about a third of the way through. It’s very promising, though she would probably enjoy the book more if she were free to indulge in being morose)

Anyhoo, in this fan fiction, Katniss plays the role of Kate Winslet. Only, Prim and Mrs. Everdeen are along for the ride, though housed in third class, and Katniss is forbidden to see them by her heel of a boyfriend, Cato.

Peeta is the lover, but unlike Leo in the movie Titanic, he’s rich. Which would seem perfect, except that Cato’s quite violently possessive. And has done other rude things to Katniss that make her go completely numb. So he finds out about Peeta, of course, and warns Katniss that she must stay away from him — or else. And of course, Peeta keeps approaching Katniss, and Katniss thinks that “his kindness was poison. Sweet, perfect poison, and it was going to kill her. She had to destroy her idea of him first.”

The writing’s very good. Better than self has any right to expect.

Katniss decides not to worry about Cato, and let things unfold with Peeta: “But she could figure this all out later, couldn’t she? She could have this carefree happiness for a little while. She would need to live on it for a very long time.”

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.
