These Mentions (A Post Inspired by This Week’s WordPress Daily Post But Containing NO Photography)

What is the history of the term ‘Manila Envelope’?

Why is it always about Imelda’s shoes?

Who was that fiction writer who had a character think (in a novel):  At least no one expects me to wake up and be Corazon Aquino today!

What was that novel about Alaska that mentioned Filipinos in the canneries? Or working as cab drivers?

Did Filipinos really show up in Louisiana in the 17th century?

Did we once sail over the far seas in thin wooden canoes, fast as wind?  Self was in her car, driving, when this historical expert who had just written a book came on and was interviewed (probably by NPR, that’s the only station self listens to on a regular basis) and said, apropos of nothing, that we (Filipinos) had been excellent seafarers and had crossed thousands of miles of ocean in those long wooden things that are pretty low to the water — could those have been catamarans? — and it was genius to use those boats because they never capsized, not even in the roughest seas.  (And self didn’t get the name of the author.  AAARGH!)

When was the last time you saw a Filipino play a Filipino in a TV series or Hollywood movie or indie movie?  (At least, there was that one athlete in the Sochi Olympics.  He skated well.  Self was holding her breath tight during his routine.  But he skated well.  And he had the BEST costume.  Gold braid and kinda Romeo-ish.  See ya in four years, Michael Christian Martinez!)

Does this sound maudlin?  Chees-y?

Peeps, it is true.  Self looks for Filipino mentions in all her readings.  Even in the 1,000-page BLGF by RW, which is about Serbia and Macedonia, locations that are nowhere near the Philippines.

Stay tuned.
