Self hasn’t written a post like this since the time she saw Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre and fell in love with the gold filigree bonnet Mia Wasikowska/Jane Eyre wears in the final scenes.

It’s taken a couple of years, but self has arrived at a new object of wonderment:  the gold medallion that Effie gives Peeta (per his request), that he ends up giving to Katniss while they are on a beach together.

Dear blog reader, if you are impatient with self’s constant parsing of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie, especially when she discusses Peeta, read no further! You might say this is the most digressive or trivial post self has ever written.  It goes on and on and on and on in circular fashion, like a cat chasing its own tail.  Because the questions self raises have — alas — no answer!

Will someone please tell self why Peeta would request a medallion that holds the pictures of Katniss’ mother and sister, with Gale’s picture right in the middle?

Is he just being incredibly sado-masochistic? How did he get those pictures?  Was he carrying them around on his person?  Did he always know that at some point he would give the photos to Katniss?  Wouldn’t they get wet and soggy after he had that fight with the other trib in the water?  Did Effie in fact put those pictures in the medallion before handing it to Peeta?  Anyhoo, why would she do such a thing?  Isn’t she part of the sham romance, doesn’t she have to help the two District 12 young’uns continue the farce? How did those pictures get into a gold medallion?  Did they just walk?

And furthermore, Gale is NOT a family member, so why would his picture be THERE?  And doesn’t Peeta say something like, “Your family needs you,” before handing the medallion to Katniss?  Or is he just being very manipulative and sly?  Or what?

This is bothering self no end.

Self would also like to say:  Jennifer Lawrence is one awesome actress.  How can self say this?  Just look at her romantic scenes with Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta!  For heaven’s sake, the disparity in size alone would make that pairing extremely unlikely.  But she goes at it with such determination that it convinces all of us in the audience that she is passionately in love with this boy/man.  That she needs him.

Finally:  Self has noticed that in every single HGCF press appearance, Elizabeth Banks takes care to look absolutely stunning.  Truly, there is no other word for it.  In one interview, she wore a blue dress.  In another, she wore orange.  Is this a statement along the lines of:  You should see me without lurid face powder and false eyelashes, I am as gorgeous as Katniss?  Acting Effie all the time must prove — at some point —  wearisome.  After all, the woman, Effie, has orange hair.

Self is reminded of an interview conducted with Game of Thrones actress Michelle Fairley.  After the “Red Wedding,” she was asked by an interviewer what she planned to do next.  “Cut my hair,” she replied.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers.  Stay tuned.
