There are friends and there are friends.

There are friends you only know from the internet.  And then you meet them, and you think:  Why did I ever friend this person?

On the other hand, you could be lost in Himachal Pradesh, on your first trip to India, and in a small village called Bir, you can bump into the Colonel, the man everyone refers to as “JP.”

In the preference for nicknames, India reminds self so much of the Philippines.

Also, in the fact that there’s a before-breakfast tea, and there’s a mid-afternoon “tea” which is more like a snack.  And then there’s dinner, and then sitting around sipping more tea or, if you prefer, coffee.

The Colonel promised that next time self is in India, he would pick her up at the airport and plan an itinerary that included all the places she’d missed:  Udaipur, in fact Read the rest of this entry »

Reasons Why

Reasons why tonight is a most excellent night:

  • It is the last night in June and tomorrow is the first day of July.  July is self’s favorite month of the year.  Mostly because it is self’s birthday month.  And son’s birthday month.  Also, it starts off with a bang (the Fourth, of course).  The man takes Thursday and Friday off.  It is now the right time for barbecue.  Self loves barbecue!  Especially steak barbecue.  And mesquite charcoal.
  • There are still a few episodes left in Season 3 of “The Killing.”  Self loves, loves, loves the performance of Mireille Enos.  Her bulldog ethos.  Her wrinkly forehead.  Her total lack of embarrassment about sinking her chin into her neck, thereby creating the (misleading) illusion that she has a double chin.  Even Holder, who turned her off initially with his Benicio del Toro-like slurring, has won her over (He is played by a Swedish actor.  That’s right:  a Swedish actor named Joel Kinnaman who is well known in his native country.  It’s his first American role.  And he pulls off lines like “Rabbits are da bomb!” and “What’s up, Mama-san?”)  Luuuv that scene where Linden (Enos) gets right up in the face of her superior, whose name is Skinner (Very “X-Files” — nice touch!)
  • She has now reached p. 320 of Sister Carrie.  Only 100 pages more to go!  Please God let it end before Carrie has to sacrifice her very last dollar (eked out by being a member of a chorus line in a musical) to that miserable man, Hurstwood.  The man who pretended to marry her just so Carrie would consent to live with him.  Who has so little sense of shame that he thinks nothing of asking her to hand over her every dollar (while he sits at home reading the papers and pretending to job hunt).  Carrie needs a new pair of shoes!  That’s right, Hurstwood, you jerk!  Is that too much to ask?  Carrie, don’t wait to get permission, you just run along and spend your hard-earned dollars on shoes, clothes, whatever your heart desires!
  • It is 8:59 p.m.  It is still light enough to see outside.  Oh happy happy joy joy!

Stay tuned, dear blog readers.  Stay tuned.
