A Dictionary of Gardening (by a Writer Who Misses Her Garden)

To amputate is to cut a branch off.  It is best if the cut is clean.

Aquatic plants grow in water.

Arable land is land that may be plowed.

An avenue is a long walk leading to a house.

Bulbous refers to roots that are round, like onions.

Capillaries are very small roots.  When a plant is lifted from the ground for transplanting, capillaries look like strands of hair branching off from the roots.

A carpet is turf of smooth, green grass.

To cultivate is to dress and labor over (ground, usually).

A garden requires diurnal —  meaning daily — care.

To drill is to cut a narrow trench for the purpose of conveying water.

The autumn equinox is past.  The next equinox will be in March.  An equinox is the period when day and night are of equal length.

Exotic plants come from across the seas.

To inoculate is to bud or graft (a branch or a root).

To inter is to bury.

To irrigate is to water.

To layer, one must bend down branches (gently, gently).  Peg the lowered branches, cover with earth.  Wait; the branches will take root.

To percolate is to strain.

Perennials are plants that continue to grow year-round.

Vernal refers to the perfection of spring.

If soil is viscous, it is clammy, like bird-lime.
