Can’t Sleep

Can’t sleep, went to the roof.

It was cool, there was a strong breeze.

Self was reminded of earlier this afternoon, when she was sitting in the priest’s house.  She heard a great rustling from the garden and thought it was rain.  Rain in March?  It was raining in September, the last time she was in Bacolod. Shouldn’t the rainy season be over by now?  She looked out the window, and she saw all the plants in the garden shivering in a strong breeze.

Later it grew hot.  So hot it made self dizzy.  But now and then there’d be something setting the palm trees to shaking.

And now here she was on the roof, and the same waiter as all those previous times was telling self that the mangos were made with fresh mangos from Guimaras, super-sweet, and even though she’d already begun the day with two buko shakes, she ordered a ripe mango shake.

The fountains were going, and a big group of people on holiday were laughing and playing around the terrace, and when self looked down at the street, she saw the same old turo-turo on the corner (the one she swears she’ll try one day, she never gets sick from eating street food, she learned this about herself in India), and the sikabs lined up beside it, and the pockets of light on the narrow streets, and the occasional sound of a revving motor, and the languid security guards, and the drivers in the parking lot, and she really loves this place, it is an awful slog getting here but once she is here she feels anxiety peeling off, shedding, and even though she’ll be up all night, just thinking, she loves the thoughts that come to her here.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers.  Stay tuned.
