Now Is the Time

It is the open reading period for 94.7% of all Literary Journals in America.

Most literary journals need some months hiatus to catch up on the thousands or millions of unsolicited junk —  er, self means creative work —  which clog their arteries yearly.  And those months are usually June, July, August.  Sometimes May, June, July, August, September.  Sometimes even April, May, June, July, August, September, October.

But almost every literary magazine is open for submissions right nowRight now!

Do you know what that means, dear blog readers?  It means you must get ready to send out all those stories, poems, flash fiction, essays, graphic art which have been languishing forever in your “To Send” pile.  It means you must get ready to fish out the credit card to pay the usual $3 on-line submission fee (Only skinflints still use snail mail, because it’s free)

Just now, self paid $3 to submit on-line to Ploughshares.

She was going to submit “Thing” (her new, most favorite story — every story she’s just finished writing becomes her new, most favorite) but experienced some kind of brain fart and sent “Tagaytay” instead, which is set in the Philippines, but not in Manila  — whatever you may say about it, Manila at least has 56% name recognition among literary editors — and once again it seems she’s thrown out a perfectly good $3, which could have gone towards paying half of a bargain matinee movie ticket, or a small cup of Rick’s ice cream, or a cell-pack of ground cover from Redwood City Nursery.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers.  Stay tuned.
