Karl Taro Greenfeld in ONE STORY, Part II

Self is crawling along with her reading, just crawling along.  To add the (at least 3 lbs.) Sunday New York Times to her already humongous pile of “To Read” stuff is sheer lunacy.

Or, is it inspired?

This evening, self decided that she must, at all costs, finish reading at least one thing.  And that one thing, she decides, must be the Karl Taro Greenfeld piece in One Story that self blogged about, months and months ago.  Now, she is only 10 or so pages from the end, and things are not looking good for the story’s protagonist.  To wit:

(The last couple of sections may strike some as being rather gruesome.  Self’s just saying.  Or maybe it’s not really gruesome, just depressing.  War is terrible.  But we never remember, so we have to keep reminding ourselves by reading writers like Karl Taro Greenfeld)

“Is there a plan?” I asked.

The Minor Leftenant turned to me.  He nodded.  “The plan hasn’t changed.”

“I believed, when we were given orders, that this was a very different posting, that it was to be uneventful.  Dull, even.”

I supposed, actually, that this was dull, in stretches.  It was just that the dull stretches were punctuated by intense bouts of terror when we were getting killed.
