Abigail Licad in CALYX, Volume 26, No. 2

Reading again.

Self was going to post a picture of a freesia that suddenly popped up in her side yard. All orange and red, glowing in morning sun.

But here’s a poem that she encountered in an issue of Calyx. And she really likes it.

Freesia can wait. Here’s the first half:

On Her Star Trek Fixation
by Abigail Licad

It’s not just fantasy or escape necessarily that she wants
but a new experience — otherworldly — not just to zoom
across the Milky Way and Andromeda but to command
her own starship;

not just to charge through galaxies but to watch them up close
rioting in incandescent swirl; not just to survive the poisonous
weft of Venusian nebulae or trace the razor glint
of Saturn’s rings, but to discover existences beyond Neptune;

not just to slip through Lorentzian wormholes and travel
through time but to be freed from past and future,
released at last from memory, consequences,
and, worst of all, remorse;

not just to wear high-cut patent leather boots and red
Lycra jumpsuits or to sashay down the corridors of the Enterprise
and have her way, but to act as she wants when she wants,
without a thought to the exigencies of decorum or morality;

Wasn’t that fun to read, dear blog readers? Self adores Star Trek. Anything Star Trek.

Plus, Abigail just sounds so smart.

About the Poet:

Abigail Licad grew up in the Philippines and immigrated to the U.S. at age 13. She received degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Oxford University (United Kingdom). She lives in Union City, CA and is an assistant editor for Hyphen magazine.

Stay tuned.
