A New Naomi Watts Movie: Happy Happy Joy Joy

Self is so excited!  A new movie with Annete Bening and Naomi Watts has opened in Palo Alto Square.  Hubby’s taking the day off tomorrow, and self already informed him that she wants to see “Mother and Child.”

The other movie showing there now is “Please Give,” with Catherine Keener.  This one is a great movie.  Self saw it last week and now she’s become a firm Nicole Holofcener fan.  Not only that, Amanda Peet, playing against type as an acerbic bitch, is truly a-MA-zing.  The only thing self didn’t like about the movie was the somewhat pleading tone of the title:  it in no way prepares one for the film’s razor-sharp views on women, children, and aging.

Self read a Salon.com article this morning that took issue with the view of adoption the movie represented.  (And after a very strenuous search of Salon.com this evening, what she finds is a rather good —  on balance —  review.  She was not dreaming, however.  There was something about the director and his skewed view of adoption, written by a woman who was either an adoptee or an adopter)  Perhaps self can weigh in after she’s seen the movie.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers.  Stay tuned.
