Latest Grant Rejection

One thing good about applying for a Silicon Valley Artists Grant is: they actually send you the tape of the judges’ discussion of the merits or de-merits of your application, something that is — after you get over the humiliation of listening to your work discussed in the most absolutely clinical, detached terms, that is — actually a very, very good thing.

So you actually get to find out about what the judges are saying about you (A learning experience to the nth power!)

And during the tape, self listened to someone named Elmaz describe her writing as “very cliché,” and someone named Junot say he loved her writing, but would defer to Elmaz (Why, Junot, why?).  Then a third judge, a woman whose name self didn’t recognize, said that there was such an “urgency” to the tone of self’s writing. Which self appreciated very very very much.

The stories under discussion were “Isa” and “Dumaguete.”

Stay tuned, dear blog readers. Stay tuned.
