Oh, the Excitement! The Anticipation!

It is raining! And cold!

Self also looked up the weather in New York City. She found out today, when she called home, that Dearest Mum will be in the San Francisco Bay Area for two nights, on the 22nd and 23rd of May. She will then spend the rest of her time on the East Coast, and will return to San Francisco for only one night before returning home to Manila, sometime mid-June.

Self tells herself: Calm down! Even though, the last time you called Dearest Mum, less than a week ago, she didn’t seem able to state exactly when she was leaving! And you have visions, awful visions of Dearest Mum crossing the New York avenues un-aided, and getting hit by a car. Self remembers how hard it used to be for Dearest Dad to make it from one side of Park Avenue to the other, for his diabetes affected his circulation, and he walked with a limp. But Dearest Mum seems quite cheerful (And self realizes that the 22nd, the day Dearest Mum arrives, is also the day self is having a wisdom tooth pulled. Yes, Dearest Mum’s un-erring instinct for arriving when self is sure to be most dis-combobulated has never ever faltered, even after so many years)

Self mentions to Dearest Mum that she will be in Scotland in September, and Dearest Mum very excitedly says she could join self there. And then self is very confused, for the last time self spoke to Dearest Mum (Less than a week ago, if you recall the previous mention, dear blog readers), she said she would be spending the month of July in London and/or Oxford, to accompany self’s Manila niece B, who is doing a summer program in Oxford and so the prospect of Dearest Mum hanging around London until September, when self is there, seemed very very dim. No, worse than dim: negligible)

Self lets it go, but suddenly thinks: Hey, it might actually be fun to tool around Scotland with Dearest Mum! At the very least, it would mean a free ride! So self calls back Dearest Mum, and with dismay realizes Dearest Mum is not thinking at all of this very exciting prospect, in fact has forgotten it entirely, and self has to repeat — haltingly, this time: Scotland? September? You said you might come — ? And it sounds now like an absolutely stupid idea.

Hello, self? Hello? When will you ever learn?

Stay tuned.
