First Lines of Capsule New Yorker Movie Reviews (April 2010)

Here’s a collection of what self thinks are the more interesting first lines from capsule movie reviews in the 26 April 2010 issue of The New Yorker:

City Island (with Andy Garcia):  This amiable family comedy, written and directed by Raymond De Felitta, is one step above a sitcom but two below “Moonstruck.” —  Anthony Lane

Date Night:   Steve Carell and Tina Fey, in their debut vehicle as a screen couple, are caught in a clunky and obvious comedy  —   the latest version of the mortifyingly square “Out of Towners.” (Guess self must be really square, since she liked the movie! The original one, that is)   —  Anthony Lane

How to Train Your Dragon:   The Dream Works animation team does some of its best work in this story about a Viking boy (voiced by Jay Baruchel) who disobeys his warlike tribal family and befriends their enemy  —  a young, wounded dragon.  (Self loved this one) —   David Denby

The Secret in Their Eyes:    On the surface, the Oscar-winning foreign-language film for 2009 is a legal thriller, but it’s a powerfully and richly imagined genre-busting work that successfully combines the utmost in romanticism and the utmost in realism.  (This is one of self’s favorite movies, so far this year)  —   David Denby

(A movie that self really wants to see, that is showing right now in indie movie theaters, is Please Give, with Catherine Keener.  Self finds it interesting that Ms. Keener’s career seems to be gathering momentum, in her 40s! In addition, self finds it very inspiring that she manages to stay so thin)
