Backwards: NYTBR 28 February 2010

Self’s “pile of stuff” is all mixed up! Last week she posted about the 14 March New York Times Book Review, and now she’s posting about an issue two weeks before that. You’re a mess, self! A real mess!

Anyhoo, here are the books self is interested in reading (if she ever lives long enough) after perusing the 28 February 2010 issue of The New York Times Book Review:

1.    After reading Alida Becker’s review of Peter Hessler’s new book,Country Driving: A Journey Through China

2.    After reading Robin D. G. Kelley’s review of Nadine Cohodas’ biography of the singer Nina Simone, Princess Noire:

The Economist: 30 January 2010 Book Reviews

Self woefully behind in her reading of The Economist. She feels it criminal to just zip through the magazine, there is so much meat there for her brain. Thus, only tonight did she get through the issue of 30 January 2010. Without further ado, here is the list of books self is interested in reading after perusing the above-named issue’s Book Review section:

After reading a review of Joshua Ferris’ new novel, The Unnamed:

  • Joshua Ferris’ first novel, Then We Came to the End, described thus: “Told in the collective first person, it was a stylish rendering of workplace ambivalence in the wake of the dotcom bust.” Sold!

After reading a review of Peter Carey’s new novel, Parrot and Olivier in America, a fictional account of Alexis de Tocqueville’s landmark visit to the United States:

  • Alexis de Tocqueville’s classic Democracy in America

After reading a review of Maria McCann’s new novel, The Wilding:

  • Maria McCann’s first novel, As Meat Loves Salt, set during the English civil war
  • Maria McCann’s new novel, The Wilding
