Wanderings: “Women’s Voices For Change”

Self stumbled on this website just this morning (Got a full eight hours of sleep, hurrah!)

Here’s how she found it: she googled “Shouts & Murmurs” + “New Yorker”

It’s from an article posted by Christine on Aug. 31, 2007:

“Why is Shouts & Murmurs Off Limits to Women”?

Catherine Price of Salon’s Broadsheet reads the “Shouts & Murmurs” section of The New Yorker, but she doesn’t find it very funny. Nor does she find funny Benjamin Cohen’s findings about the gender breakdown of the bylines: “Out of the 133 authors of features under the “Shouts & Murmurs” banner (in the modern, post-1992 era), 17 have been women. That’s 12.782 %.”

The last time a woman was published in “Shouts & Murmurs” was — ready for this? — 2004, which prompts Price to comment: “Again, this is irritating in and of itself. (Um, hello, couldn’t you at least get Nora Ephron?). But then you look at the stuff they’re running, and it’s like, dude, it doesn’t matter if you think women are less funny than men if the stuff you’re running isn’t funny to begin with.”

Let’s for the moment forgive the “dude” reference, dear blog readers (which makes Benjamin sound like he walked straight off the set of “I Love You, Man,” or some Sean William Scott movie). Did this study get performed because of infamous Chris Hitchens article on Vanity Fair about why women just “aren’t funny”? That article provoked a storm of protest, from all sorts of women. (Bite ‘cher tongue, Chris!)

Speaking of Vanity Fair, what do dear blog readers think of their latest cover, the one featuring up-and-coming Hollywood actresses, all of whom just happen to be white as the driven snow? Doesn’t it strike one as — frankly — weird? Where is Zoe Saldana? After all, didn’t she just appear in two of the biggest movies of 2009? And where are the young Asian American actresses (Self is sure they’re out there), who seem to be even more invisible than African American actresses?

Stay tuned, dear blog readers, stay tuned.
