New Year/ New Thoughts

She put up curtains. Sheer curtains, made in India, with a kind of burnished leaf pattern. She didn’t have a curtain rod, so she tacked the tops up with thumb tacks. Finally, the view of the neighbor’s ugly back yard has been erased. At last! Why did it take her 18 years? Now she doesn’t have to look at the broken-down fence, the weeds, the dried-up flower beds, etc etc (Oh, and she also called hubby at work and asked for his credit card number. Because, she told him, she wanted to order a bronze curtain rod from Pottery Barn. The man seemed quite taken aback at this wholly uncharacteristic manifestation of get-up-and-go)

She researched air fares for son to join her in Washington next month, when she reads at the Writer’s Center with poet Steve Fellner and musician J. Robbins (Feb. 19).

She rooted around in the garage and found a beautiful glass lamp that she’d forgotten about. It worked, and self dug around some more and came up with a perfectly fine linen lampshade, and she brought the lamp inside and remembered that a long long time ago, self had a neighbor who told self how much she enjoyed looking at that particular lamp through self’s living room window. The neighbor was quite elderly (already in her 80s by the time she and self got to know each other), and one day an ambulance came and took her away and self never saw her again. But here is that self same lamp again. It is beautiful.
