Things Self Learned Today, the First Tuesday of January (2010)

  • There is such a thing as a Grateful Dead Archive (Or, GDA).  It is in UC Santa Cruz.  And it is in need of a curator (See self’s previous post, below)
  • Gracie, self’s younger beagle, is “clinically obese.”  At today’s annual check-up, self discovered that Gracie weighs almost 37 lbs.  The normal weight for a beagle of her size, according to the vet, is 26 lbs. Now, self has to bring Gracie to the vet for a weigh-in every two weeks.  This is the reason for the li’l crit’s increasing lethargy, her panting on walks.  Pretty soon, if Gracie continues gaining weight at this pace (Last year, she was already overweight, at 32 lbs.), Gracie will soon not be able to walk at all.  She will be immobile, a canine Jabba the Hutt.  Self now recalls that during Dear Bro’s visit, last October, Gracie was begging and self was about to toss her a biscuit when Dear Bro said:  “Stop feeding her!  She’s obese!”  Which was the first time self heard the awful “O” word applied to one of her li’l crits.  And shows just how much in denial self sometimes is.
  • Sam Mendes is hawwttt!  Self saw a picture of him on /Film today (in connection with his signing on to helm the next James Bond movie).  He and Kate Winslet make one beautiful power couple.
  • There is no better bargain in the world than the $6 price for the first screening of the day at the Redwood City Century 20.  $6 buys you two and a half hours of happiness —  sheer bliss.
  • Mary Steenburgen is —  OMG —  hawwttt!  Her butt in “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” outshone Sarah Jessica Parker’s or Hugh Grant’s.  Whenever she was on-screen, her casual cowboy elegance was so mesmerizing.  She did excellent rendition of a Sarah-Palin-type gun-toting meat-loving Wyoming sheriff’s wife.
  • Sarah Jessica Parker is teensy teensy teensy.  She must be, at most, a size 2.  How a grown woman —  American, not one drop of Asian American blood —  gets down to Read the rest of this entry »
