Kanlaon Currently Loves

  • io9 for her (sci-fi) movie fixes
  • San Carlos Farmers Market for her fresh food fixes
  • Chowhound, always and forever
  • Costco, because even if she goes in hungry, she always leaves full.  Would you believe self if she told you that today, around noon, there was a guy playing Bach on one of their piano displays? (Yes, self made it there, Penny.  Car leaked something awful.  Self is bringing it to be fixed tomorrow, bright and early —  finally! Where oh where were those Martha Stewart chicken slab pies ???)
  • “Man in the Mirror” (Michael, oh Michael)
  • ZYZZYVA‘s Howard Junker.  Why?  Just because.  Because he makes her laugh —  ?  Is that a good enough reason?  (Have you read his interview with Poets & Writers, in which he explained his un-retirement?  Well, have you?)
  • Pawainc blog for when she’s hungry for news about the Filipino writing community
  • “Moon,” “Star Trek” (Young Spock Forever!), “The Hurt Locker”
  • 7th Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Food Writing Contest  (4,500 to 5,00 characters, approx. 800 words) to honor the Philippines’ dean of food columnists.  Deadline was originally Aug. 31, but now pushed back to end of September.  Contact Ms. Girlie Canlas for more info:  dgfawards@yahoo.com.ph.
  • Stella Kalaw’s blog, for its beautiful mystery
  • Vanity Fair (so sad to hear about the demise yesterday of Dominick Dunne. Amazingly, self was even sadder when she heard about Dunne than she was when she heard about Ted Kennedy!) for William Langewische and Maureen Orth’s writing
  • Sunday New York Times Travel section (Last Sunday featured an article on La Mar, the restaurant in Pier 1 that self brought Penny to, after the staged reading of her play, last October!)
  • Sarah Helm, who wrote the book self just finished reading, about Vera Atkins —  so heartbreakingly sad! The bravery of the WW II agents will live in self’s memory for a long, long, looong time.

They must have been somersaulting in the aisles of Costco when they saw you, Marianne, their lost and favorite customer. I must read that article about La Mar!!

Just for you, Penny, I was going to quote from the Sunday NY Times article about La Mar: Then I realized, I inadvertently threw it away.

Thank goodness I can still search the trash bin outside 🙂

    Stay tuned.

Great list, and will find those details about the food writing contest and repost.

Did you know that Food Writing is a subject in the Harvard Journalism Program?

I think you should submit to the contest 🙂
