Musings on Last Night (Revolution Café in the Mission)

Kathleen was there! And all her six children! And her hubby, who was so tall!

Kathleen’s third daughter looks like Kathleen.

Mercy Bell is a wonder, a real wonder: that voice, that spirit.

Revolution Café was small and crowded (the better to experience the music, the ambience). The audience clapped enthusiastically after each of Mercy’s songs (all of which she wrote herself).

A young man reading a book at the bar seemed to have decided that he would simply go into a zone and ignore everyone around him, even the singing. So he kept his shoulders hunched over his book and never turned around. Self wanted to tap him on the shoulder and say, “Excuse me? You must be a writer.”

Self could have stayed for dinner with Kathleen and her family: she would have loved to chat, but she’d been up since 4 a.m., thinking of son driving back to San Luis Obispo.

In closing, self would just like to say that, although she didn’t get a chance to try the café’s tomato soup, she did try the Chimay beer and it was wonderful. And now self has to go plant a lavender.
