More From Self’s “The Lost Language”

With self, it’s all about place, dear blog readers.  It’s really all about place.

Self’s been exchanging e-mail with Leslie Brown of Isotope.  Self thinks it is so exciting to see her words in typeface, as part of a magazine.  Leslie sent the Table of Contents, and self sees she’s been included in “non-fiction.”  It’s fine, self never knows what to call her work anyway.

Below, more from self’s hybrid essay/memoir/story, coming soon from Isotope:

Luzon is a large, skull-shaped island in the Philippine archipelago.  The skull appears on maps as a profile; the open mouth is formed by Manila Bay.  The skull faces east.  Invaders from the west came here by rounding the Sea of Celebes.  Numerous islands dot the sea, too many to be adequately explored.  Some are only a mile wide.  Deeply forested, these islands were once whispered to be the home of giants.  No one knows if the stories are true, since, as far as anyone knows, no one has cared to find out.  But the Philippine archipelago is full of secrets, secrets it would take a lifetime to uncover.

Coming Soon From Isotope

Self’s hybrid essay/story, “The Lost Language”, is coming soon from Isotope. Here’s how it begins (Self’s always loved landscapes, stories having to do with landscape, etc etc.  This one’s about Pinatubo) :

The Lost Language

Filipinos once had an ancient written language. If I were to show you what the marks look like on a piece of paper, they would look like a series of waves, more like Egyptian hieroglyphics, like the eye of the Pharaoh I saw in my old high school history books.

The language was written on tree bark. Epics were probably written in this language, but I don’t know what they are. My ancestors are shadowy people. Shadows.
