NYTBR 3 May 2009: The Short List

Self could call this the baseball issue (since there are reviews on books about baseball —  thank God these did not make up the entire issue:  self never reads books about baseball).

Or perhaps it’s the “politics and race” issue, since there are reviews of books attempting to parse what Touré (in a Page One review) refers to as “the iconography of blackness.”

Well, you won’t find any of these in the list self drew up below, as she’s in the mood for a different type of summer reading.  Without further ado, the books self is interested in reading after perusing the 3 May 2009 issue of The New York Times Book Review:

1.    After reading William Boyd’s review of Lynn Freed’s new novel, The  Servants’ Quarters:

2.    After reading Liesl Schillinger’s review of Colm Toibin’s new novel, Brooklyn:

3.    After reading Mary Roach’s review of Daniel James Brown’s The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride (excellent choice of reviewer, that, for a book about America’s most famous case of cannibalism!):

  • another book about the Donner Party, Ethan Rarick’s Desperate Passage
  • Daniel James Brown’s The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride

4.    After reading Geoff Nicholson’s end-paper essay, “Go Ahead. Spoil My Appetite”:

  • Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 (“I can’t think of any other novel in which so many meals are consumed while being so little described.”)
