Self’s 10 Best Movies of 2008

Ed Norton, Jon Voight in "Pride and Glory"

Movies that were pure visceral pleasure (including some that required leaving the brains at home, but anyhoo):

  • Burn After Reading (Frances McDormand, self loves, loves, loves)
  • Elegy (Penelope Cruz amazes)
  • Ironman (Gwynnie and Robert are a good team!)
  • Man on Wire (unforgettable; cried)
  • Pineapple Express (James Franco adorable as pothead)
  • Pride and Glory (Edward Norton doing his intense shtick again —  but nobody does it better)
  • Quantum of Solace (Oh Daniel, be still self’s beating heart)
  • Tell No One (Really came out of left field)
  • The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (one-two sucker punch of an ending and Vera Farmiga, wow!)
  • W (Finally, the moment all America has been waiting for:  Jeffrey Wright aka Colin Powell gets to utter “F— you” to Richard Dreyfuss’ Cheney)

Runner-Up:  In Bruges

Caveat:  Still dying to see “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Valkyrie”
