Already, Confusion

Self has still to embark on this road trip with Dearest Mum (scheduled for today, right now in fact), but already she is non-plussed.

After spending the early morning hours packing, responding to student e-mails, and tidying up in the kitchen, self sits down to await Dearest Mum. It occurs to her that Dearest Mum went out last night with niece G, and may still be resting up. Self wishes that she had remembered to ask Dearest Mum what time she wanted to leave for San Luis Obispo. Usually, Dearest Mum calls very early in the morning — like yesterday, when she called to let self know that she should reserve half of the sweaters she received from Dearest Mum just a few days ago, to give to niece G. That call clocked in at 6:52 a.m. But today, for whatever reason, the phone is silent.

Finally, at 9:23 a.m., self decides to call. Aunt answers the phone (apparently chewing her breakfast).

“Do you want to talk to your Mom?” Aunt asks. Which is a really stupid question, for why else would self be calling? She never chats with Aunt. Never.

Self replies in the affirmative. She can hear Dearest Mum chatting merrily away in the background. When Dearest Mum gets on the phone, self gets straight to the point: “What time did you want to leave?”

“Anytime!” Dearest Mum replies, also with mouth full of self-doesn’t-know-what: nan with Manchego cheese, probably.

“Let’s go now, then. I’m ready,” self says.

“OK, let me just call over to your other Tita to tell her to rent us a car.”

See, it’s this sort of thing that completely confounds self. Self surmises that Dearest Mum’s mood has changed, perhaps as a result of having dinner with G last night. Now, Dearest Mum is no longer so sanguine about going to see A in San Luis Obispo. She probably woke up this morning, began having a very chatty breakfast with self’s aunt, and perhaps began wishing that the road trip would go away. That it would disappear of its own accord, as it probably would have, if self hadn’t called. That is, self can see Dearest Mum still at the breakfast table in her aunt’s house, still merrily chatting away, at noon. At 3 p.m. At 5 p.m. Meantime, son would be awaiting our arrival in San Luis Obispo. And getting miiiighty hungry, as self assured him that she and Dearest Mum would be there in time to take him out to dinner.

Suddenly, Dearest Mum remembers. And she says she will now undertake to have aunt rent for us a car. In this manner, going to San Luis Obispo is suddenly reduced to the level of a trip to the local Safeway. All she has to do is get aunt to arrange for a rental car, and she can do that right now — even though rates probably won’t be as good as if she had done this in advance, but money is never a problem to Dearest Mum, she just isn’t the dollars-and-cents kind of person that self is (How, self can’t help asking herself now, how did self ever spring from the loins of such a goddess of pluck and plenitude?).

Self decides to hang up and pretend like she is not going anywhere today. Let’s just see what happens. Stay tuned, dear blog readers, stay tuned.
