Featuring compelling works-in-development by poet Joel Tan, composer Dwayne Calizo, composer Florante Aguilar, writers Marianne Villanueva, Josef Anolin and Allan Manalo. Engage in the process as artists (re)create a Pilipino American universe through song and text blurring lines of mythology, history and reality to examine our own humanity.

8pm Fri, October 3, 2008
Perfumed, barefoot with painted toenails, eyes blackened with kohl, big and beautiful, the conjurer, the Pantheon’s Big FABULOUS Queer Deity offers a feast of poetic incantations, karaoke songs, adobo & rice to the ghost of Marcelina Navarro, a young, expectant Pilipina tortured and buried alive for alleged infidelity by the female members of her Masonic lodge in the late 30’s. Moderators: Lucy San Pablo Burns, PhD. and Christine Bacareza Balance.

“the ghost of her
drifts around this lonely town
that has known nothing else since
but secrets
she will pull you
down deep far
under & smother you
with a blanket of dirt.”

Self Comments on the Emmies

This morning, self will attempt to comment on the Emmy nominations. She’s not going to let the fact that she hasn’t seen half the shows, or the fact that she’s groggy from having only had three hours of sleep (which seems to be the norm nowadays) prevent her from having an opinion. After all, this is America! The Land of Speak Up or Shut Up! Without further ado, the categories:

Best Drama Series: “Damages” (Glenn Close, how self wishes she had more than basic cable), “Dexter,” “Lost” (Self never was into), “Mad Men” and “House.” Self completely bewildered by all the fuss about “Mad Men,” perhaps it is the hot sex and Jon Hamm. In this category, the only show self watches regularly is “House,” so she will pick that.

Best Comedy Series: “The Office,” (OK, Ha, ha, this is funny, even though self is beginning to tire of John K and his relationship with Jenna Fisher), “30 Rock,” (Self likes Alec Baldwin), “Entourage” (Jeremy Piven very funny), “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “Two and a Half Men” (What! A show with Charlie Sheen gets nominated for an Emmy? Self does admit to watching it occasionally.)

Lead Actor, Drama Series: Michael C. Hall (“Dexter” — weird show that makes a serial killer look sincere), Jon Hamm (“Mad Men” — cute, but no cigar), Cranston (“Breaking Bad” — no comment), Gabriel Byrne (“In Treatment” — is it simply enough to look rumpled and sad-eyed?), Hugh Laurie (“House” — Oh, give this man an Emmy already!), and James Spader (“Boston Legal” — Self would not mind if someone gave this actor an Emmy, but on the condition that he lose at least 20 lbs.)

Lead Actress, Drama Series: Glenn Close (“Damages”), Holly Hunter (“Saving Grace” — half the time, all she has to do in this show is look the part, open her mouth, deliver her twangy lines, and smoke), Sally Field (“Brothers and Sisters”), Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer” — yes! yes! yes! No one on TV does red lipstick better!), Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”)

Perusing the above, self is really gnashing her teeth that no one from her favorite show, “Battlestar Galactica,” has been nominated. Mary McDonnell’s President Laura Roslin can make mincemeat of W. Katee Sackhoff’s fighter pilot Starbuck makes our governor look like a robot (Wait, maybe he is a robot! Or maybe he thinks he is still in “The Terminator” movies!)

Stay tuned, dear blog readers, stay tuned.

The Point Where “Babae sa Breakwater” Just Lost Her

Was the point where the poor young man and his lady love dress up in salvaged wedding finery, wade into the water just behind the Manila Hotel, and dip their faces into garbage-strewn filth.

Subsequent to that, a scene where the squatters who live along the breakwater of Read the rest of this entry »
