This morning, 7:05 AM, watching A&E’s “American Justice: Tales of a Serial Killer” (Ugh, ugh, ugh, what is the reason for self’s continuing fascination with depravity? With stories, for instance, of men who stab their elderly mothers etc etc etc? Self will never know. Which brings to mind dear friend Mrs. King who inquired of self in the hospital — where she was recuperating from having delivered humongous 8 1/2 lb. baby boy the day before — “What is that thick book you are reading?” Answer: Charles Dicken’s Bleak House)
It is still very early in the morning but self has already encountered two fantastic quotes that she can’t wait to share with dear blog readers. The first is from an interview with Edward P. Jones (whose novel, The Known World, is one of self’s favorites) in an old issue of New Letters:
Interviewer: Is your mom still with you?
EJ: No. She died in ’75.
Interviewer: I think she’s been a big influence in your life. Who else has been a big influence, do you think?
EJ: That’s about it. I’m not really swayed by a lot of people in life. What my mother taught me was enough; I don’t need to learn from anyone else.
Next, a quote from The Economist, the Jan. 26 – Feb. 1 issue (Self still playing catch-up with her reading, and by the way she believes she is missing an issue, the one that came before this one. But, she digresses):
