Quote of the Day: St. Thomas Aquinas

Every Christmas, Father Miguel Bernad, 91 now, sends self a card from his home in Cagayan de Oro. He recently retired as editor of the journal Kinaadman. Self hopes he is enjoying his retirement and writing a lot.

This year, the card from Fr. Bernad contains a quote from St. Thomas Aquinas:

Vetustatem novitas umbram fugat veritas noctem lux eliminat

When self’s Dear Departed Dad was studying at the Ateneo, he had to learn Latin. That was no longer the case when self was there. But to self’s great amazement it was offered as an elective in Sacred Heart, son’s high school.

Self thinks it is too bad that they discontinued offering Latin at the Ateneo, for there’s a kind of rich sonority to the language. Besides which, self surmises that anyone studying Latin would be a great speller, as so many of the roots of English words are derived from Latin. Self’s father told her that he had to write, on each paper submitted: Ad maiorem dei Gloriam (For the greater glory of God)

Here is Fr. Bernad’s “free translation” of the St. Thomas Aquinas quote:

The old yields to the new,
The shadows flee from the Truth,
The night is over, the Light has come.
