Various Delights (Turon, Baklava): First Saturday of October 2007

It’s been quite a long day, dear blog readers. First self dropped by Redwood City Farmers Market, where she bought cilantro, garlic, eggplants, and red and green peppers. Then, she had to hot-foot it to San Mateo Public Library, where she joined Allen Gaborro, Abe Ignacio, Vangie Buell, Oscar Peñaranda, and Marie Yip for a reading to celebrate Filipino American History Month. After that, she raced home and hubby and she went to the City to attend a concert at Davies Symphony Hall.

It’s 11:15 PM, self and hubby have just staggered in. Had a little trouble getting out of the city. First, hubby missed freeway sign and failed to get on correct lane while heading south on Franklin. Then, he kept going even though self kept telling him to make a left so we could get to Van Ness, and we somehow wound up on Guerrero. At which point, hubby panicked and began yelling “Which way?” To which self could only reply that she didn’t know, which was not, obviously, the answer hubby needed. After getting lost some more we eventually stumbled on Cesar Chavez. That was how we got home.

Still, we have home-made baklava that we doggie-bagged from a little Middle Eastern mom-and-pop place on Hayes, a few doors down from Absinthe. Self and hubby enjoyed a delicious lamb shish kebab dinner and gyros for a grand total of $21.95. And earlier today, at San Mateo Public Library, self tasted the yummiest turon — the kind with nangka inside. So embarrassing — self made it a point to stand at the back of the room so that she could eat without attracting attention, but every time she bit down on the turon, there’d be a horrible crackling sound, as if she were chewing chicharon instead of turon. But she couldn’t stop chewing, for some reason. Dear blog readers are probably thinking that self should be talking about the readings and not about the food, so self will impart that the readers were uniformly excellent, where’s the surprise there.

Here are some other interesting things about today:

Self thinks that the San Mateo Public Library is the fanciest library, by far, on the Peninsula. On wall plaque acknowledging major donors, self saw the name Genentech. In café on library’s third floor, one can order such delights as Oreo Cookie Frappucino.
Michael Tilson Thomas is very tall and also very slim.
Self learned she likes Beethoven more than Brahms.
Oscar Peñaranda has a written a very droll story about Charles Mingus and a character named Yau-Yau that self thinks would make an excellent play.
Ed Lozada says he is still accepting last-minute submissions for the PAWA anthology, until the end of this month (Check out link to Philippine American Writers and Artists website under “Other Sites of Interest”).
If you wear all-black (preferably with a leather jacket) to the SF Symphony on a Saturday night, you will blend right in. Also, the bar in the First Tier Lounge serves only these three kinds of soft drinks: Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Sierra Mist. And a shot of Glenlivet will set you back $10.

Stay tuned, dear blog readers, stay tuned.
